Call Us:
It might seem like one of life’s mysteries. How can a tap on a single small brake pedal stop your heavy vehicle? It occurs because of the scientific principles of hydraulics and friction. At Eagle Automotive & Transmission in Spring, Texas, we love providing automotive information to our clients, so we’re glad to explain a bit about brakes. However, you won’t have to worry about making any repairs yourself. Our shop is convenient for drivers in the greater Houston area. You’ll find us just down the street from Klein High School at 6975 Louetta Rd Spring , TX 77379 Spring, TX 77379. Make your appointment for brake repair online or by calling (832) 559-8912.
THE BRAKING OVERVIEW
When you apply a small amount of pressure to your car’s brake pedal, the vehicle slows and stops. But what happens in between? To understand, we’ll take a look at a few science concepts. Pressure to the brake pedal moves a lever and piston, forcing brake fluid from the master cylinder, where it’s stored through lines toward the cylinders located at each wheel. As the fluid pressure builds, it moves the brake calipers that hold the brake pads to make contact with the rotor (disc) that sits inside each wheel. This is what’s known as hydraulics. A small amount of force is multiplied through a fluid to generate a much stronger force. Once the brake pads are moved against the rotors, friction is generated by the metal components rubbing against one another. This is what slows and stops your automobile. (Note: This description applies to disc brakes found on the front wheels and sometimes the rear of modern cars. To balance cost with performance, some vehicles still employ drum brakes on the rear wheels.)
